Message from the Chairman

Nowadays the world is much more competitive, the young ones are expected to be competent in many skills and to cultivate a global vision. These are essential qualities for a young person in a competitive society like Hong Kong. Training of students in these areas is an expensive and demanding endeavour. Even universities in Hong Kong and the world alike are pumping extensive resources into the training of their students through student activities and exchange programs. Unfortunately, many secondary schools in Hong Kong appear to be lagging behind in exploring new strategies on this issue. This large gap between secondary schools and universities is an unhealthy phenomenon.

I felt ecstatic when I learnt that United Christian College (Kowloon East) has a strong vision and mission for expanding its present school. This bigger and broader vision and mission extends to that of the community. The new project would include building a student complex which would house a chapel, a swimming pool and a student hostel. I believe that these are essential infrastructures for preparing our students for the future society. It is also in line with my own philosophy of a holistic and balanced education. The benefits of having these facilities are many; for example, the hostel can provide accommodations for incoming exchange students from other countries. This broadens student mix and facilitates intercultural exchange. Students from UCCKE can also benefit by living in the hostel for a period of time during their six years of study. This provides a wonderful opportunity for them to live as a group and develop their discipline and interpersonal skills.

I have taken up the helm as chairman of the fundraising committee with great pleasure because I trust that the Principal of UCCKE is leading the School in the right direction. To the community, this may serve as one of the models for the education development in Hong Kong. Together with other members of this committee, we look forward to work with parents, teachers, students and friends of UCCKE on this most important project. We desire to see the generous support of all parties who share this vision through fervent prayer and donations and I trust that we can walk together to fulfill this dream. We hope to raise enough money to fund the construction of the complex, and I hope that we can all work together to see this complex materialize. I wish to appeal to all of you for your financial support or other means of contribution is very important in making this meaningful event successful, and my heartfelt thanks to you all in advance.

主席的話

在現今充滿競爭的社會，年青人除了要懂得書本上的知識，還要具備多種技能和國際視野，才能在社會上立足。目前香港和世界各地的大學都藉著各種學生活動和交流計劃來培育學生，可惜本地中學在這些方面遠遠落後於大學，這種不良現象成為中學與大學的一道鴻溝。

我 為到滙基書院（東九龍）有強烈的願景去擴建校舍而感到興奮，這更廣闊的願景將惠及整個學校群體。這個計劃包括興建一座學生宿舍及綜合大樓，將包括小聖堂、 游泳池和學生宿舍等設施。我相信這些設施對裝備學生，投身未來社會都是必須的，亦與我對整全、平衡的教育理念一致。新增設施，好處多不勝數，例如宿舍能讓 海內外交流生入住，既擴大本校學生的接觸面，也有助促進文化交流，擴濶學生視野。本校學生亦將受惠於學生宿舍的興建，因為在其六年中學生涯中，必然有機會寄宿，體驗群體生活，並有助建立良好紀律與人際關係。

能夠獲委任為籌款委員會主席，本人深感榮幸，因為我確信校長正帶領學校朝著正確的方向而行。滙基書院（東九龍）對香港的教育發展起了模範作用。本人暨所有籌款委員會成員謹此向各位呼籲：滙基書院（東九龍）的家長、老師、學生及所有認同本校辦學願景的友好，誠意邀請你透過恆切的禱告和慷慨的捐助，與我們一起攜手，令學生宿舍及綜合大樓得以建成！
